Cane & Conaghan succeed in providing readers with a much better understanding of the significance of law and the legal system. It doesn't intend to go into heavy specific detail which is a wise decision because the Companion blends the basics to indulge the occasional curiosity with useful suggestions for further reading paths which will not let you put this book down- always an indication of the success of any type of dictionary.

Our laws are in a state of flux so this new Companion is as good as it can be for now, but I can see that there will be a need for regular new editions to keep up with the reform of law as changes take place. I will read and re-read it to keep up with events.

Behind me on my shelf, I have three copies of this textbook. The first copy is from 1966. It is a look back in time that is enough to make any childbirth professional giggle. The second book I have is from 1978. Again, this outdated book is a serious look at midwifery, with photos that are outlandish. I keep these books because I find the evolution of the books phenomenal... and yet, the content has not changed much over time. Childbirth is still physiologically the same as it was in 1966.

The third book I own is eight years old. While it is not the most recent edition of the book, it was the edition printed before the current edition. This book has been what the previous editions have not been for me: a serious textbook about midwifery. Realistically, there are hundreds of midwifery textbooks out there, all of them good. But the Myle's textbook stands out above the others for a number of reasons. For one reason, it is simply well written. For another reason, it is been kept current with the changing times. And for a third reason, it tends to be the accepted textbook in midwifery study groups everywhere. The information in this book is solid and helpful. As a book to read as an aspiring midwife, this is definitely an intermediate level book, although the first few chapters begin gently. It is a book I would pack with me if I travelled.

I was only just wishing this week that I had my old Maggie Myles textbook with me. I left mine behind when I left Zambia where the book was used as an excellent tool for those of us practicing as midwives and educating young Zambian nurses in the same skill. The book helped me many times in difficult situations to make critical decisions regarding the mothers and babies in our care. I never dreamed I would get a chance to write a review. I doubt it is to the standard you require. No matter. I know the book was up to the standard of any nurse midwife working in challenging circumstances.

Explaining pragmatics has got to be a difficult task, but professor Huang does an excellent job at it. The writing style is smooth and not packed too tight with technical information, making it a pleasant textbook to work with, yet it informs you very well.

One outstanding feature of this textbook is that it has 3 chapters on the interface between pragmatics and the cognitive, semantic, and sytax side of linguistics, a real plus. Unlike some textbooks, this one does not have a long drawn out cryptic introduction. The excercises at the end of the chapters are balanced (not to hard, not to easy) and appear to be well thought out.

I highly recommend it, and would give it a 5 star rating, except for an incorrect statement on page 102-103, where an illocutionary force of a speech act is made out to be the same as the illocutionary point. There is an important and fundamental distinction between them as pointed out by Searle (a founder of speech act theory) and Daniel Vanderveken (see Expression and meaning p.3, and Speech Act Theory and Pragmatics p.252-253)

I recently moved to Australia and have to pass local college exam. This book is very helpful. All topics are generally well presented. Brief and to the point.

One really annoying problem - incompleteness of the index. It is sometimes necessary to perform search of three-four keywords in order to find the topic you need. Some topics are also a little dated, for instance, there is no mention of ropivacaine in the chapter on obstetric epidural. But that is the fate of most reference books: new topics pop up very often.

This books contains a collection of articles on different topics written by different authors. This is normal for the field of psychology, but it does not work so well in this volume. Some of the chapters contradict each other. And the authors vary widely in scienticity. Some of the authors cite extensive rigorous research to back up their points. Others cite theories and ideas (many of their own) instead of any of the copious amounts of research on the topic (that sometimes contradicts their ideas). The editors could have done a better job selecting chapter authors who used the same standard of research. To its credit, it does cover a wide range of topics and some of the individual chapters are very informative and well researched.

You can't say that there is a spectacular change from the previous edition. The better a product gets, the harder it is to improve it. But the format is frendlier, the guidelines and recommandations have been updated (which was a weak spot of the previous edition), and there are some new interesting chapters (like the management of stroke). In conclusion, still very useful as a reference.

The textbook skips over vital explanations, uses too many abbreviations (without explaining what they are), and bolds important words without defining them. I was constantly on the computer attempting to find a better explanation elsewhere. However, I guess I should fault the professor of my course more than the textbook authors. Perhaps this book should have a memo explaining it is only for those with an advanced understanding of microbiology and medicine.

This is the book my school recommends for the basic internal medicine course. Its amazing. If you are a reader, and like medicine, this is a must.

The writing flows like silk. The chapters on Cardiology and Molecular Medicine are PHENOMENAL. Its comprehensive without being overloaded with details, its brief without being too brief, its a very enjoyable from cover to cover.

To give you an example of the kind of details it misses, in Chronic Renal Disease, you get a nice explanation of the complications though no expansion on the viscous circle that happens.

One other downside is the lack of illustrations. There do exist but there aren't many, same goes for tables. Also, the Neurology section could be better.

Read it, then jump to Cecil or Harrison if you want more details. I had to do so and made a mistake buying Kumar which I didn't like.

My senior colleagues told me this is one of the best sources for USMLE Step 2. Seems to be the opinion of many people online too.

A very good clear book, it is made for the student that has just started a course, and would like to have a clear overall view of the material. When I start a course, I would like to have a book that will give me the introduction, and only after I have seen with what I am dealing, I feel prepare enough to read some other much more detailed material. The details are saved for last.

This book is perfect for the introduction, and much more. If you would like to read about the smallest! details I suggest you read the bible of Harrison.

In short: THIS is the book for the med student, it serves as the skeleton ad muscles of the course; for the fat you should consult Harrison.

From my experience, a student should never start reading Harrison.

Cecil essentials serves as a quick review for all the internal med, before and after the exam.

Why 4 and not 5 stars? because i would have liked a more thorough and complete review of neurology.

We are using this book and CMDT adn McCance Pathophysiology. I like this text for easy to understand explanations of the different disorders. CMDT does a better job of explaining labs and treatments and has a consistent organization, but can be heavy reading for trying to figure out what are the presenting s/sy of the disease. They are both good companion texts.

I get a hernia when I pick up Harrison's. I've used it twice this year. As a graduating senior, I collected all of my upperclassmen's suggestions of books. Cecil's has a bit more info than I'd like, but it's a readable length if you're not a procrastinator like me! Medwhiz's review is spot on.

Cecil's is extremely well written, and easily understood. It stresses only those topics that graduating seniors absolutely have to have a clue about by graduation, and it doesn't waste too much paper. It's not a pocketbook, but at about half the physical size of Harrison's, it's not easy to carry around, either.

If I had to buy only one book out of Harrison's, Cecil's, NMS, and Blueprints, I'd get Cecil's. It's well worth the money.

"Can't someone make a good ER reference?" 2010-01-05

I work in Emergency Medicine, and have read all the books on the topic. I (or at least our hospital) owns most of the handbooks (Tintinalli, Detroit Receiving, the one from the maker of the Current series) so I bought this one. I bought this one mainly because I owned the Oxford Clinical Medicine reference which is fantastic. This one, not so much. I found it didn't really give you a ton of solutions-there are many topics that end in "refer to primary care". That's all well and good if they can get in (which they can't sometimes, as we all know). It doesn't seem all that evidence based and seems a bit anecdotal. Also, I believe the book is a bit premature in suggesting discharge vs. admission (see section on meningitis, which suggests the patient can possibly discharged in cases of viral meningitis). Better yet, put them in isolation and start them on antiviral therapy. Just a thought...

I bought this in hopes of finding a gem. Everyone in my EM residency and others had one or two specific references books, but not this one. No one had heard of it. It looked good on the shelf.... I thought I would try it in hopes of discovering a great new reference book. Nope.... I immediately found this hard to use and when I could find the topic or issue I wanted, it did not offer what I needed. Too much text, not enough bullet points about differentials, diagnostic workups and various treatments. I want the "little red book" of EM, I wanted the Mass General Internal Medicine manual but for Emergency Medicine (which is actually made but is no where near as good as the Internal Medicine version so I don't recommend that one either...) This book was disappointing.

I am an ER intern, and was looking for a reference-able book for on the job...

I compared this and Baby Tint's, this was far better, why you ask? well here's why...

1. Organized to look up fast, with table of contents on back cover, dark tabs on side pages for each section, and 2 strings to keep bookmarks on the go that wont fall out. Also more durable cover to repel ER fluids flinging around. and coffee.

2. Problems are well organized so you know where to look for what tests to order, when to consult, and how to treat.. properly.. specifically with drug dosages so you dont need another drug pda. Alphabetical and by system. Also has dispo instructions.. follow up in how many days? 3-5 or 5-7?

3. Quick reference section for what to do in common emergencies, ACS, COPD, Asthma, etc... just a list of what to do and order ASAP... very useful.. especially for interns/dummies.

4. Good overview, when you just want to look up things quickly, what was that? and what do i do? its like a Wikipedia for EM.

5. Also section of common drugs, procedures, peds stuff. It's like a senior resident's essential notes compiled, probably similar to pocket medicine, but for EM... ie its more readable (not an outline from med school)

My co interns have been looking for a starter reference book, and this is what we seem to be agreeing on. Tintinelli's or Rosen's or whatever fatty for home to look up and read "deeper", and this book for at work right before you order the 5 essential things you need or set up for a procedure, "light reading" to look up stuff fast, or during lecture when something is mentioned and everyone else seems to know exactly what to do and you feel like you should be nodding your head too... but you aren't. Very EM oriented. Quick, precise, and actually usable.

Really great book, came in handy for my ED rotation. It's all in there, from trauma to toxicology to ob/gyn and loads more, in enough detail to know what to be doing and not sound dumb. Great for residents too, I'd imagine, as a first port of call to check out normal values, protocols and differentials - plenty of charts and tables for quick fact checking. Obviously a bit thin on the ground in some parts, but hey there's no way you can fit all of emergency medicine in your pocket!

Ok..So, I HAD to read this for a graduate level elective course. For a political science student, I can say that this is a relatively easy read. Although, explanations of some of the international structures are almost farcical. The book progresses from ancient public health to contemporary which is quite interesting. With a caution, near the middle of the book some terms are not explained as easily, they are merely stated. This is a rather good book but if you are looking to understand American public health-you need an additional book. This book is very expensive, but at least it is filled with content.
